Additional information

Basic Violet 1 Acetate is produced and put on the market as acetic aqueous solution and cannot be isolated in a solid powder form. The acetic acid solution does not have explosive properties. To determine, whether the dye structure itself could harbour explosive properties the following assessment is considered:

Column 2 of REACH Annex VII provides the following specific rules for adaptation of the standard information requirement for explosive properties. The study does not need to be conducted if:

• there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule, or

•the substance contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties which include oxygen and the calculated oxygen balance is less than 200, or

•The organic substance or a homogenous mixture of organic substances contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties, but the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C.

Basic Violet 1 Acetate does not contain any chemical group associated to explosive properties as reported in Table R.7.1-28. Moreover the calculation of the oxygen balance gives a figure of -234.

Finally, the thermal behaviour of the analogue substance was tested by DSC from 40° to 500°C. The onset of decomposition is below 500°C (i.e. 199.7°C) and the exotermic decomposition energy is less than 500J/g (i.e. 184.7 J/g).

Based on all the above considerations, Basic Violet 1 Acetate is considered not explosive and the explosive properties test does not need to be conducted.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Classification for explosive properties is not warranted under Regulation 1272/2008
