Acutely toxic to aquatic organisms.

Depending on local conditions and existing concentrations disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are possible.

This aquatic toxicity assessment was based on the following data:

The LC50 value of the test substance on Leuciscus idus was determined to be greater than 100 mg/L in a guideline study according to DIN 38 412 (BASF AG 10F0752/875018, 1988). Therefore, the test substance is considered with high probability acutely not harmful to fish.

The EC0 value of the test substance in Daphnia magna was determined to be 100 mg/L in a guideline study according to DIN 38412 L11. The EC50 value was found to be about 169 mg/L (BASF AG, 1/1705/2/88, 1988). Based on these data, the test substance is considered with high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

Two tests on acute algae toxicity are available. In the first study the EC50 on the growth rate of Desmodesmus subspicatuswas determined to be 34.23 mg/L according to german national guideline DIN 38412 L9. The EC10 value was found to be 16.05 mg/L (BASF AG 2/1705/88, 1989). The second test was performed by Chen et al. (2011) using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata in static non-GLP non-guideline approach. In this test the EC50 was estimated to be 9.5 mg/L while the EC10 resulted in 0.35 mg/L. Although the literature study seems to be of a slightly lower validity than the BASF guideline test the results were taken into account for further assessment (PNEC derivation, classification and labeling) due to product safety reasons.

Based on these data, the test substance is considered as acutely toxic to aquatic algae.

The EC10 value of the test item on Pseudomonas putida was determined to be about 70.9 mg/L in a guideline study according to DIN 38412, part 8 (BASF AG 9/0821/87, 1987). Hence, depending on local conditions and existing concentrations disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are possible.
