Description of key information

Sika Hardener LI is not classified as flammable liquid, flammable in contact with water, pyrophoric, self-reactive substance, self-heating substance or organic peroxide.

Flammability

The test on the flammability (Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.10) was not performed as the test item is a liquid. For liquids the primary value for ease of ignition is the flash point conducted using Method A9 ‘Flash Point Method’ of Council Regulation (EC) No 440/2008. The result of the Flash Point test is used to allocate a liquid substance into the appropriate flammability class.

Pyrophoric properties

In accordance with section 2.9.4 Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and ECHA guidance on the application of CLP Criteria section 2.10.4.2 the classification procedure for pyrophoric liquids need not to be applied when experience in manufacturing or handling shows that the substance or mixture does not ignite spontaneously when coming into contact with air at normal temperatures. Based on the experience in handling and use the substance is not known to ignite spontaneously when coming into contact with air at normal temperatures. Thus, no study was conducted.

Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VI and with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 Annex I section 2.12.4.1 The classification procedure for this hazard class need not be applied if:

a) The chemical structure of the substance or mixture does not contain metals or metalloids; or

b) Experience in handling and use shows that the substance or mixture does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water; or

c) The substance or mixture is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture.

Based on the experience in handling and use the substance does not react with water and in addition the test substance is not pyrophoric . Thus, no study was conducted.

Self-reactive substances and mixtures

In accordance with section R.7.1.10.4 ECHA guidance IR/CSA chapter R.7a, section 2.9.1 ECHA guidance on the application of CLP criteria and UN-MTC section 5.1 appendix 6 the test for self-reactive substances was waived.

The test item does not contain any functional groups quoted in ‘UN Manual of Tests and Criteria’ (fifth revised edition, appendix 6, table A 6.1 and A 6.2) or Bretherick’s – Handbook (6th Edition, Volume 2, p 128 ff) which may indicate explosive or self-reacting properties. Therefore, it can be concluded by expert judgment that the test item does not meet the criteria for self-reactive substances, Thus no classification procedures for self-reactive substances was is required.

Self-heating substances and mixtrures

In accordance with column 2 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006Annex VII and section R.7.1.10.7 of ECHA guidance IR/CSA, the UN Test method N.4 for self-heating substances and mixtures do not need to be conducted as the substance is a liquid with no flash point up to 200 °C

Organic peroxides

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 Annex I section 2.15.1 only organic peroxides have to be tested according to the UN-MTC, Part II test series A-H. Based on the structure it can be concluded that the substance is not an organic peroxide. Thus, no tests were conducted.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the determined flash point (204.2 °C, Key study), the molecular structure and experience in handling and use, the substance was not classified and labelled as flammable, flammable in contact with water, pyrophoric, self-reactive substance, self-heating substance and organic peroxide according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).

In accordance with UN-Transport regulations the substance has not to be classified as readily combustible solid and self reactive substance in Class 4 Division 4.1 , as self-heating substance in Class 4 Division 4.2, as substances which in contact with water emit flammable gases in Class 4 Division 4.3 and as organic peroxide in Class 5 division 5.2.
