First-aid measures

Inhalation: IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. Administer oxygen if necessary. Call a POISON Centre or doctor if you feel unwell.

Eye Contact: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. If eye irritation persists, get medical advice/attention.

Skin Contact: IF ON SKIN (or hair): Wash with plenty of water. Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. If skin irritation or rash occurs: Get medical attention.

Ingestion: IF SWALLOWED: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth. Get immediate medical attention.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed

Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Harmful if inhaled. May cause an allergic skin reaction.

Indication of immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Treat symptomatically.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable Extinguishing Media: In case of fire, use water spray, foam, dry powder or CO2 for extinction. Keep containers cool by spraying with water if exposed to fire.

Unsuitable Extinguishing Media: Do not use water jet.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

May polymerise on heating. Sealed containers may rupture explosively if hot.

Advice for fire-fighters

A self contained breathing apparatus and suitable protective clothing should be worn in fire conditions.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Ensure suitable personal protection (including respiratory protection) during removal of spillages. Do not breathe vapour. Wear protective gloves/eye protection/face protection.

Environmental precautions

Avoid release to the environment. Spillages or uncontrolled discharges into watercourses must be alerted to the appropriate regulatory body.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. Transfer to a lidded container for disposal or recovery. Use only non-sparking tools.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling: Do not eat, drink or smoke at the work place. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not breathe vapour. Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

Do not use compressed air to charge, bleed or handle the product. Ground/bond container and receiving equipment. Use explosion proof electrical equipment. Use only non-sparking tools. Take precautionary measures against static discharges.  

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:

Store in a well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed.

IMPORTANT: Methacrylates stored in bulk must be kept in contact with air (oxygen). Never let bulk quantities freeze.

Monitor stored material for loss of inhibitors. Monomer vapours are uninhibited and may form polymers in vents or flame arrestors, resulting in blockage of vents.

In order to prevent the risk of ignition/explosion/fire in the head space above the liquid; design equipment/instrumentation to be suitable for operation within flammable environments. If using inert/non-flammable gases in the head space (so as to avoid flammable air mixtures); ensure that the Oxygen concentration is about 8 % v/v. Oxygen concentrations of between 5-21 % v/v are generally recommended to ensure the stabilizer remains effective, but are dependent on the specific stabilizer type and storage conditions.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Appropriate engineering controls: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Use in closed systems or provide adequate LEV if natural ventilation is insufficient. Consideration should be given to the work procedures involved and the potential extent of exposure as they may determine whether a higher level of protection is required.

Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment (PPE)

Eye/face protection: Wear eye/face protection. Safety spectacles/goggles/full face shield.

Skin protection: Wear impervious gloves (EN374). Suitability of gloves should be confirmed with glove manufacturer. Change gloves, if contamination occurs or duration of activity exceeds breakthrough time. Breakthrough time of the glove material: refer to the information provided by the gloves’ producer.  

Respiratory protection

Wear suitable respiratory protective equipment if engineering controls are insufficient, or not present, and exposure to high vapour concentrations is likely. A suitable mask with filter type A (EN141 or EN405) may be appropriate. In the event of formation of particularly high levels of vapour a self contained breathing apparatus may be appropriate.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity: Will exothermically polymerise in the presence of initiators.

Chemical stability: Stable in the presence of inhibitor.

Possibility of hazardous reactions: Susceptible to polymerisation initiated by prolonged heating or the presence of catalyst.

Conditions to avoid: Heat and direct sunlight. Avoid storage conditions over the specified storage life and temperatures.

Incompatible materials: Polymerisation catalysts, such as peroxy or azo compounds, strong acids, alkalis and oxidising agents. Oxides and salts of transition metals. Organic Nitrogen containing compounds.

Disposal considerations

Dispose of contents/container to: hazardous waste in accordance with local, state or national legislation. Incinerate under approved controlled conditions, using incinerators suitable for the disposal of noxious organic waste. Allocation of a waste code number according to the European Waste Catalogue, should be carried out in agreement with the regional waste disposal company.
