Remarks:
Test item in mixture with kieselguhr (1:1)

In the investigation of self-ignition in the Grewer-Oven initially an endothermic process was observed for the pure test item and the test item in mixture with kieselguhr in the temperature range of 160 - 170°C. This effect is attributed to the melting of the test item. Hence the pure test item flowed out of the wire basket before self-ignition could occur. The test item mixed with kieselguhr showed small self-ignition beginning at a temperature of 265 °C. This self-ignition led to a final temperature of approx. 310°C.

Conclusions:
In the Grewer oven test, the pure Ethyltriphenylphosphonium iodide melted at around 160°C and flowed out of the wire basket before self-ignition could occur. Due to the melting of the test item before self-ignition could occur the test item does not need to be classified as self-heating substance in Class 4 Division 4.2 according to the UN Transport Regulation or according to EC 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) Annex 1: 2.11.

Description of key information

not self-ignitable up to melting point

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

GLP study according to VDI 2263, sheet 1 and with respect to the classification procedure of the UN Transport Regulation (Class 4, Division 4.2) and GHS or EC 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) Annex 1: 2.11) using a Grewer Oven.

UN Transport Regulation: Due to the melting of Ethyltriphenylphosphonium iodide before self-ignition could occur the test item does not need to be classified as self-heating substance in Class 4 Division 4.2 according to the UN Transport Regulation.

GHS and EC 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) Annex 1: 2.11: Due to the melting of Ethyltriphenylphosphonium iodide before self-ignition could occur the test item does not need to be classified as self-heating substance according to EC 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) Annex 1: 2.11.
