The photodegradation of 14C-Bronopol at pH 4 in buffered aqueous solutions using artificial sunlight was investigated according to US EPA Pesticide Assessment Guidelines, Subdivision N, Paragraph OPP 161-2 [The Boots Company, 1994].

Results show that Bronopol is photodegraded at environmentally relevant temperatures. Bronopol decreased to 54.35 % after 24 h, 12.62 % after 72 h and was not detected after 168 h. A half-life of 24.3 h was reported at 25°C.

At least three degradation products were observed, however, only two were tentatively identified as tris-(hydroxymethyl)-nitromethane and carbon dioxide with tris-(hydroxymethyl)-nitromethane being further photodegraded.
