The tests performed by BASF indicate that the substance is at least biodegradable without being readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria. Due to the formation of an unknown metabolite which suppresses further biodegradation, biodegradation stops after 4 days of test duration when non-adapted inoculum is used. If adapted inoculum is used, this metabolite is also degraded and the test results in degradation rates between 90 -100% after 28 days, slightly failing the 10-day window. Furthermore, phthalonitrile can be easily eliminated from water.
