Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In the early-life stages test, the LOEC of the test substance to steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri) was 0.089 mg Cr/L (0.456 mg CrCl3.6H2O/L) and NOEC was 0.048 mg Cr/L (0.246 mg CrCl3.6H2O/L) were derived after 72 days exposure from newly fertilized eggs to feeding fry.

Additional information

The early-life stages test was conducted to determine the chronic effects of trivalent chromium, added as chromium nitrate, on the early life stages of steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri). Exposure during the chronic test lasted 72 d for newly fertilized eggs. Nine concentrations of <5, 9, 13, 19, 30, 48, 89, 157, 271 µg/L and two controls were applied to test fish.

The LOEC of the test substance to steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri) was 0.089 mg/l and NOEC was 0.048 mg/L (equivalent to 0.456 mg/L and 0.246 mg/L as chromium trichloride hexahydrate on an equimolar basis) were derived after 72 days exposure from newly fertilized eggs to feeding fry.

Chromium trinitrate as well as chromium trichloride both are very soluble chromium(III) species, dissociating in water fully to [Cr(H2O)6]3+ ions, thus showing absolutely comparable aquatic toxicity effects. Both substances do react acidic in water unlike other soluble chromium(III) species such as basic chromium hydroxy sulphate. Hence, chromium trinitrate and chromium trichloride are interchangeable with regards to chromium(III) concentration simulation in aqueous systems and are used both as model substances for soluble chromium(III) compounds.
