Description of key information

The most sensitive species of three different water living insects was found being Ephemerella subvaria in this assay and LC50 (96h) for chromium (III) was found being 2.0 mg Cr/L (equivalent to 10.3 mg chromium trichloride hexahydrate/L.

Additional information

Three different water living insects (stonefly, (Plecoptera) Acroneuria lycorias; a mayfly, (Ephemeroptera) Ephemeralla subvaria; and a caddisfly, (Trichoptera) Hydropsyche betteni) were tested for toxicity towards heavy metal salts including chromium(III) as chromium trichloride hexahydrate. The most sensitive species was found being Ephemerella subvaria in this assay and LC50 (96h) for chromium (III) was found being 2.0 mg Cr/L (equivalent to 10.3 mg chromium trichloride hexahydrate/L). The other two species, Acroneuria lycorias and Hydropsyche betteni, were less sensitive to chromium trichloride hexahydrate with LC50 (96h) values of > 64 mg Cr/L and 64 mg Cr/L respectively.
