Description of key information
Appearance:
On the basis of physical observations, It is concluded that 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid physically appear to be solid crystalline leaflets.
Melting point:
Melting point of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid is determined to be 177 Deg C.
Boiling Point:
Boiling point i.e point at which phase change occur form liquid to gas of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid is determined to be 234.6 Deg C.
Density:
Density of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid is determine to be 1.2143 g/cm3 at 25 Deg C.
Particle size distribution:
The particle size distribution of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 150 micron to 53 micron.
Vapour pressure:
The estimated vapour pressure of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid at 25 deg C was 0.00113 Pa.
Partition coefficient:
Based on the available data from handbook and authoritative databases, the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance 2-Hydroxy-4-methylbenzoic acid was estimated to be 2.99. Based on the estimated value, chemical 2-Hydroxy-4-methylbenzoic acid can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.
Water solubility:
Based on available data from handbook or authoritative database the solubility of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid in water was determined to be 10100.0 mg/L at 100°C
Surface tension:
Based on the data from ACD labs, surface tension for chemical 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid was predicted to be 0.0580 N/m.
Flash point:
Flash point of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid is estimated to be 158.6 Deg C.
Auto flammability:
2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid is not auto-flammable.
Flammability:
2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.
Explosiveness:
The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.
Oxidizing properties:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance contains oxygen or halogen atoms which are chemically bonded only to carbon or hydrogen and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.
Additional information
Appearance:
Based on available data from various reliable sources such as authoritative databases and handbooks, for physical observations, It is concluded that 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid physically appear to be solid crystalline leaflets.
Other supporting data from authoritative database, also observed the appearance the chemical 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid as to be odorless white solid powder.
Melting point:
Based on available data from various reliable sources such as authoritative databases and handbooks, the Melting point of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid is determined to be 177 Deg C.
Other supporting data from handbooks and authoritative database, also supported the selected key study and exhibited the melting point of 2 -hydroxy-p-toluic acid as 177.8 Deg C and 173 °C-177 °C respectively, closer to the experimental key value.
Boiling Point:
Based on available data from handbook, the Boiling point of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid is determined to be 234.6 Deg C.
Density:
Based on available data from handbook, the density of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid is determine to be 1.2143 g/cm3 at 25 Deg C.
Other supporting data from another handbook, also supported the selected key study and exhibited the density of 2 -hydroxy-p-toluic acid as 1.2172 g/cm3 at 47.17 Deg C.
Particle size distribution:
The particle size distribution of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 150 micron to 53 micron.
Vapour pressure:
Modified Grain method was used to estimate the vapour pressure of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid using MPBPVP v1.43 of EPI SUITE.
The estimated vapour pressure of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid at 25 deg C was 0.00113 Pa.
Based on available data from different authoritative databases the vapour pressure of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid was estimated to be 0.006852 Pa at 25 deg C.
Partition coefficient:
Based on the available data in a key study from handbook and authoritative databases, octanol water partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the test substance 2-Hydroxy-4-methylbenzoic acid was estimated to be 2.99.
Additional supporting study from modelling databases indicates that the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance 2-Hydroxy-4-methylbenzoic acid was estimated to be 2.79.
Thus, on the basis of logPow value, chemical 2-Hydroxy-4-methylbenzoic acid can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.
Water solubility:
Based on available data from handbook or authoritative database the solubility of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid in water was determined to be 10100.0 mg/L at 100°C
Other supporting studies from authoritative databases suggested that the solubility of 2-hydroxy-p-toluic acid in water at 20 deg C was 10000 mg/L, closer to the selected key value.
This value indicates that 2 -hydroxy-p-toluic acid is very soluble in water.
