Description of key information

The substance dimethylolpropionic acid (Bis-MPA) is readily biodegradable in a study conducted to OECD guideline 301A.

In a ready biodegradability study the test substance Dimethylolpropionic acid was found to be readily biodegradable in a DOC die-away test according to OECD guideline 301A. In this study removal of DOC was found to be approaching 100% after the completion of the 28 day study period. In the 10 day window between day ten and day twenty mean removal of DOC increased from 10% to over 90%. These results indicate that the test substance has achieved the pass criteria for this study and can be confirmed as readily biodegradable. Abiotic removal of DOC was not found to be a significant factor in DOC decrease in the study.

A classification of readily biodegradable means that Dimethylolpropionic acid will be rapidly and effectively removed from the envrionmental compartments by biological degradation. As such removal from the STP is expected to be highly efficient and half lives in soil and sediment will be short. Thus the likelihood of long term residence in the environment is considered to be negligible for Dimethylolpropionic acid.
