Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Bis-MPA is readily biodegradable and has a low log Kow (-1.1) indicating low adsorption and bioaccumulation potential. It is fully ionised in the aquatic environment at environmental pH, but not surface active. Based on read-across from a structurally similar substance 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)butanoic acid (CAS 10097-02-6)(BCF = 62 L/kg), it is concluded that Bis-MPA has low potential for bioaccumulation.

Additional information

Biodegradation: Bis-MPA is readily biodegradable according to a study to OECD guideline 301A.

Stability: In accordance with REACH Annex VIII column 2, the hydrolysis study does not need to be conducted as Bis-MPA is readily biodegradable.

Transport and distribution: According to Column 2 of Annex VIII of the REACH regulation, no adsorption / desorption study is required if a substance and its degradation products decompose rapidly.

Bioaccumulation: Based on read-across from a structurally similar substance 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)butanoic acid (CAS 10097-02-6)(BCF = 62 L/kg), it is concluded that Bis-MPA has low potential for bioaccumulation.

Simulation testing: In accordance with REACH Annex IX column 2, the degradation simulation testing in water and/or sediment and in soil do not need to be conducted as the substance is readily biodegradable.
