Additional information

Irradiation of crotonaldehyde vapour in the presence of oxygen at a wavelength range of 238 - 366 nm (ultraviolet range) leads to a oxidation to crotonic acid. The quantum yield of the oxidation process increased with decreasing wave length.

In an acidic environment it is reversibly hydrated to aldol. The illumination of an aqueous solution of crotonaldehyde with unfiltered light on a mercury arc resulted in an only slight degradation of the substance and the formation of insoluble condensation products within a few minutes.
