There are no data on the toxicity of the test substance to algae available. In an approach of grouping structural similar chemicals effect values ranging from a best case EC3 value of 4 mg/L after 96 h of exposure to methylamine to a worst case EC50 of 0.23 mg/L after 72 hours of exposure to octylamine were determined. According to Bringmann & Kuehn 8 days of exposure to ethylamine and butylamine resulted in toxicity threshold concentrations (EC3) of 2.3 and 0.54 mg/L, respectively. With increasing unbranched chain length of primary amines the toxic effects on algae are more pronounced.

For the determination of the missing endpoint using read across data, the function VARIATION of Microsoft Excel 2003 was used. Toxicity to algae was determined for the CAS numbers 74-89-5, 75-04-7, 109-73-9 and 111-86-4. The data gap for the CAS number 107-10-8 was filled by calculation. The data for the calculation were NOEC or EC10 values experimentally determined after 72 h, 96 hours and 8 days for 111-86-4, 74-89-5 and 75-04-7 as well as 109-73-9, respectively. However, the exposure time was set to 72 hours keeping the finally determined endpoints. The resulting EC0 value was 1.081 mg/L. As a worst case consideration an EC50 value of >1 and <10 mg/L is considered as appropriate.
