The PNECaquatic is derived from the variation analysis using a read across approach for chronic data on algae resulting in an EC0 of 1.08 mg/L as worst case scenario. The substance is acutely toxic to algae.

Acute toxicity tests with invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and fish (Leucisdus idus) only showed toxic effects if the test solutions were not neutralized before (pH-effect). Therefore, the substance is with high probability acutely not harmful to invertebrates and fish.

In two chronic studies with invertebrates (Ceriodaphnia dubia), the 7d NOEC was 3.2 mg/L and 1.5 mg/L, using the read-across substances ethylamine and butylamime, respectively. The 7d NOEC of propylamine is supposed to be in between since it is a C3 substance (ethylamine: C2, butylamine: C4) and the toxicity of primary amines enhances with longer C-chains due to a higher bioaccumulative potential.

For microorganisms, no effect was detected (Pseudomonas putida) when the test solutions were neutralized before (pH-effect). The OECD 209 test with propylamine could not be used for the PNEC STP assessment as industrial sludge was used for its performance. The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
