Data on the acute toxicity of isobutyl laurate (CAS 37811-72-6) to fish are not available. The assessment was therefore based on studies conducted with the analogue substances Isopropyl myristate (CAS 110-27-0) and Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., iso-Bu esters (CAS 84988-79-4) as part of a read across approach, which is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Further justification is given within the overall summary chapter 6.1 and within the analogue justification in section 13.

The toxicity of the source substance Isopropyl myristate (CAS 110-27-0) to bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) was tested according to EPA Guideline EPA 660/3-75-009 (Sousa et al., 1979). The static test was set up with the nominal test concentrations 78, 130, 220, 360, 600 and 1000 mg/L. There were no toxic effects observed in the species tested after an incubation period of 96 h up to 1000 mg/L, resulting in a LC50 (96 h) of >1000 mg/L. After 24 and 48 h fish were observed to behave lethargic, however all fish recovered. Chemical flakes were observed to adhere to the glassware and tubes and/or collect as film at the surface.

In a second study the acute toxicity of the source substance Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18 unsaturated, isobutyl esters (CAS 84988-79-4) was tested. The study followed guideline ISO 7346-1 (Richterich and Mühlberg, 2001). Brachydanio rerio was exposed to the substance in a semi-static system for 96 h. The fish were exposed to nominal test concentrations of 100, 300, 1000, 3000 and 10,000 mg/L. No mortality was observed at any of the test concentrations. A LC50 (96 h) > 10000 mg/L was determined.

Based on the results for the read-across substances, isobutyl laurate (CAS 37811-72-6)is considered not acutely toxic to fish up to the limit of water solubility.
