The environmental modelling (Mackay III) indicates a distribution of 1-chlorobutane mainly to the water and air compartment, with 48 and 44% indicated presence respectively. Approximately 8% are expected to remain in soils. The proposed distribution is corroborated by the volatility and adsorption characteristics of 1-chlorobutane as well as its water solubility.

With a Henry's law constant of reported 1945 Pa/m3*mol, 1-chlorobutane is highly volatile and the experimentally derived logkoc value of 2.50, indicating low adsorption potential to organic matter in soils. An experimentally derived logkow of 2.64 is recorded in the database supplying EpiSuite 4.0. In Chapter 4, a water solubility of approximately 0.5 g/L is reported for 1-chlorobutane. An additional study on release of alkyl halides from soils shows an increase with increased iron content (Keppler et al. 2000).
