Description of key information
The solubilities of butenes in water were reported to range from 222 to 263 mg/L. The data were reported for two members of the of butenes category: but-1-ene (CAS 106-98-9) and 2-methylpropene (CAS 115-11-7). Insoluble in water, miscible with ether, alcohols, hydrocarbons and sulphuric acid.

The study by McAuliffe (1966) predates the implementation of GLP and standard guidelines. However, the method is described in detail and is considered appropriate for determining the solubility of a gaseous substance. The study is therefore deemed suitable as the key study for this endpoint. The solubility of butenes therefore is considered to range from 222 mg/L to 263 mg/L at 25°C. It should be noted that the solubility was measured in a closed system with an equilibrium between the vapour and water phase. This is an artificial situation and, in the environment, the observed solubility would be expected to be much less.
The solubility of 2-methylpropene is 263 mg/L at 25°C (McAuliff 1966). The water solubility of but-1-ene is 222 mg/L at 25°C (McAuliff 1966). The mean of the water solubility values for the butenes is 242.5 mg/L at 25°C and this has been used to complete the 'key value for chemical safety assessment'.
