There is no guideline available for the measurement of CS2 in water or sediment.
Water samples were taken and CS2 was purged from the samples, pre-concentrated by cryoadsorption and analysed by gas-chromatography.

Details on sampling:
Samples of 2 litres were taken at different depths, using a PVC tube and a pump. Water was allowed to flow over for 2 min and then the samples were sealed with rubber seal septa to exclude air in the samples. Samples were stored at 4 oC and were analyzed within 4 hrs after sampling.

CS2 concentrations peaked in september to ca 150 µmol/L and were some five times lower during spring.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
CS2 concentrations in a background area in Switserland ranged from 12 - 150 µmol/L (0.9 - 11 mg/L). These concentrations are partly well above the LC50 concentrations for fish and daphnids.
The stratification and seasonal variation observed in the concentrations leads to the conclusion that CS2 is biogenic in origin. The stratification also suggests bacterial breakdown in the surface waters.
Executive summary:

CS2 was measured in surface water and sediment in a background location in a lake in the Swiss alps. CS2 concentrations in surface waters ranged between 12 and 150 µmol/L. In the sediment the concentrations were higher, up to almost 400 µmol/L. The origin of the CS2 was considered to be biogenic (there are no anthoprogenic sources of CS2 in the wide surroundings). It was concluded that some bacterial breakdown was occuring in the surface waters. CS2 was the only sulphur containing volatile compound that could emit to the air. Other compounds were either broken down biologically or abiotically degraded.
