Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The information regarding biodegradability of CS2 in surface water and sediment was waived, since the test substance is readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

CS2 does not have any affinity for sediments or soil. Its log Koc << 3 and its Kow < 3 (see section 4.7 in this IUCLID5 file). Direct emission to soil or sediment do not occur. Furthermore the half life of CS2 due to evaporation from surface waters and soil is very short (in the order of hours), and it is a readily biodegradable substance (see study by Ginkel, 1992 summarised under 5.2.1 Biodegradation in water). Therefore, according to the guidelines R.7.B Endpoint specific guidance, sediment simulation testing is not necessary.
