Additional information

The acute toxicity of dimethyl sulphide (Drottar 1999) was evaluated with Oncorhynchus mykiss in a study performed in accordance with OECD testing guideline 203 and GLP. Rainbow trout were exposed to solutions renewed at 48 hours with mean measured concentrations of 62, 118, 232, 479, 970 mg/L. Observation of mortality and other clinical signs were made at approximately 3, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after test initiation. Temperatures were within 12 +/- 2°C, measurement of pH ranged from 7.7 to 8.4, dissolved oxygen concentration remained >= 7 mg/L (65% saturation). After 96 hours of exposure, mortality in the 232, 479 and 970 mg/L treatment groups was 60, 100 and 100%. The 96-hr LC50 value for rainbow trout exposed to dimethyl sulphide was 213 mg/L. The 96-hr NOEC is 118 mg/L. According to this test, dimethyl sulphide presents a low toxicity to the fish.
