Executive summary:

The biochemical oxygen demand of FAT 20010/C was determined by measuring the dissolved oxygen concentration before and after 5 days incubation at 20 °C in different test concentrations diluted in water saturated with dissolved oxygen that contains a seed of micro-organisms. The test was carried out according to ISO 5815 Second Edition 1989-08-01 (E) corresponding to 92 / 69 / EEC C.5. The test substance was tested in concentrations from about 6 to 800 mg/I. The reference substance D(+)-Glucose / L-Glutamic acid was tested in a concentration of 20 ml/l. Based on the findings of the study, the BOD5 of FAT 20010/C is 0 mg O2/g. The BOD5 of Glucose/Glutamic acid solution is 202 mg O2/I. In another experiment, the COD of FAT 20010/C was found to be 1100 mg O2/g. The BOD/COD quotient = 0 indicating that Acid Orange 154 is not rapidly biodegradable.

Executive summary:

A predetermined amount of the test substance FAT 20010/C dissolved in water is oxidized by potassium dichromate in a strong sulphuric acid medium with silver sulphate as a catalyst under reflux for 2 hours. The residual dichromate is determined by titration with standardized ferrous ammonium sulphate. The test was carried out according to DIN 38409 - H 41-1 (1980) corresponding to EEC Directive 92 / 69 / C.6. (1992). The test substance was tested with a sample weight of 5.0 mg. The reference substance was Potassium hydrogen phthalate. It was tested with 20 ml of a 0.17 g/l solution. Based on the findings of the study, the COD of FAT 20010/C was found to be 1100 mg O2/g. The COD of the reference substance is: 202 mg O2/l. In another experiment, the BOD of FAT 20010/C was found to be 0 mg O2/g. The BOD/COD quotient was zero indicating no biodegradation was observed.

The inherent biodegradability of the test substance FAT 20010/C was determined in a GLP-compliant study in Zahn-Wellens / EMPA Test according to OECD Guideline 302B. The test substance FAT 20010/C and the reference substance Diethylene glycol, respectively, were tested in concentrations of 150 mg/I DOC. The biodegradation of the test substance FAT 20010/C after 28 days was 0 %. Individual BOD5 and COD estimation were done in GLP-compliant studies according to ISO 5815 and EEC 92/69/C.6 (1992), respectively. The biochemical oxygen demand of FAT 20010/C was determined by measuring the dissolved oxygen concentration before and after 5 days incubation at 20 °C in different test concentrations diluted in water saturated with dissolved oxygen that contains a seed of micro-organisms. Few non-GLP compliant studies performed in the 70’s have reported the following BOD5 and COD values for FAT 20010:

BOD5 = 52 mg/g O2

COD = 554 mg/g O2

BOD5 = 0 mg/g O2

Relevant is the BOD5/COD quotient which is not >0.5, therefore the substance is not indicative of rapid degradation. Taking into consideration the data from key study and supporting studies, the test substance FAT 20010 can be regarded as not biodegradable..
