NTO was determined to be hydrolytically stable under acidic, neutral and basic conditions with half-life of >1 year at 25°C. However it was found to photodegrade at wavelengths within the range of solar irradiation via hydrolytic denitration and photo-rearrangement; ammonia, nitrite and nitrate were detected as final products.
