Description of key information
A study was conducted to determine the toxicity of the analogous substance , linear alkylbenzene sulfonate to aquatic algae. Selenastrum capricornutum was exposed to the test substance for 96 hrs and the resultant 96 hr EC50 was 29.0 mg/L based on cell density.
In addition, data is available for the sodium salt of the target substance, Benzenesulfonic acid, mono-C11-13-branched alkyl derivs., sodium salts EC 271-808-0, CAS 68608-89 -9 (BABS Na). In study according to OECD 201, assessing the effect of the BABS Na on the growth of the green algaPseudokirchneriella subcapitata, the 72 -hr EC50 was > 37 mg/L.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- EC50 for freshwater algae:
- 29 mg/L
- EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
- 0.58 mg/L
Additional information
No studies on Benzenesulfonic acid, mono-C11-13-branched alkyl derivs were available. However, studies have been conducted to determine the toxicity of a Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate to aquatic algae. Selenastrum capricornutum was exposed to the test substance for 96 hrs. During this time, the cell density of the algae was measured. The 96 hr NOEC was 0.5 mg/l, which is 0.58 mg/L when normalized to C11.6. The 96 hr LOEC was 1 mg/L. The 96 hr EC50 was 29.0 mg/L based on cell density.
Data is also available for the sodium salt of the target substance, Benzenesulfonic acid, mono-C11-13-branched alkyl derivs., sodium salts EC 271-808-0, CAS 68608-89 -9 (BABS Na). This substance was evaluated in a study according to OECD 201, assessing the effect of the BABS Na on the growth of the green algaPseudokirchneriella subcapitata, the 72 -hr EC50 was > 37 mg/L.
