Description of key information

Two key studies have been identified to assess the short-term toxicity of allyl alcohol to freshwater fish: an OECD 203, GLP-compliant test using Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) and published study on Fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) with analytical verified test concentrations.

The results of the acute fish toxicity studies conducted with different fish species correlate well with each other; 96h LC50 values obtained from each study (0.32 and 0.589 mg/l) support the conclusion that allyl alcohol is very toxic to freshwater fish. The lowest LC50 value was observed in the study performed on Fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) has been selected as the key acute aquatic toxicity value for calculation of freshwater predicted no-effect concentration to be used in the enviromental risk characterisation.
