PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The PBT Assessment for octanoic acid is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2012).

Persistence

Octanoic acid (CAS 124-07-2) is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria (>72% after 30 d). Thus, the substance does not meet the screening criterion for persistence and is not considered to be persistent (P) or very persistent (vP).

Bioaccumulation

Octnaoic acid has a log Kow of 3.05 (Hansch, 1995). Thus, the substance does not meet the screening criterion for bioaccumulation and is not considered to be bioaccumulative (B) or very bioaccumulative (vB).

Toxicity

Long-term toxicity testing with Daphnia magna resulted in an NOEC (21 d) of 0.2 mg/L (OECD 202; read-across from CAS 334-48-5). Moreover, the substance is not classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (7th ATP). Thus, the criteria set out in Annex XIII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 are not met and the test substance is not considered to meet the T criterion.
