Description of key information

A low potential for secondary poisoning is expected.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A bioaccumulation potential in the aquatic environment is not expected. Due to the ready biodegradability of octanoic acid, rapid degradation of the test substance is indicated. In addition, fatty acids occur in the environment naturally, are part of physiological pathways and can be used as energy source. Bioaccumulation in predators is not expected.

Furthermore, low toxicity to rats (repeated dose oral, NOAEL (38-42d) = 1000 mg/kg bw/d) was found.

As a result, a low potential for secondary poisoning of birds is expected. Further testing should not be conducted due to animal welfare.
