Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

In a CO2-Headspace test according to ISO 14593 which is identical to OECD 310 (Ready Biodegradability - CO2 in sealed vessels) methyl acrylate was readily biodegradable. The inoculum used in this study was domestic activated sludge from a laboratory wastewater treatment plant fed with municipal sewage. The assay was conducted at a test substance concentration of 35 mg/L equivalent to 20 mg/L TOC at 22 °C in the dark. After 28 days a biodegradation degree of 90 - 100 % (TIC/ThIC) was determined. The 10-day-window criterion for ready biodegradability was fulfilled (BAMM 2005).

Methyl acrylate was tested in a closed bottle test performed in accordance with OECD guideline 301D, attaining 50 - 60 % BOD of ThOD within 28 days (BAMM 1996). It was significantly degraded (> 30 % within 14 days) in a MITI test with a mixed inoculum of soil, surface water and sewage (Sasaki 1978).

Based on the presented test results, methyl acrylate is considered to be readily biodegradable.
