Description of key information

Experimental studies gave no evidence of skin irritation. Slight to moderate transient irritation to the eye that may occur is not relevant for classification.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Additional information

Synthetic amorphous aluminum sodium silicate (NAS) failed to produce irritation of rabbits´ skin. Ocular effects were variable in several studies: Initial conjunctival irritation was observed following instillation of NAS powder into rabbits´ eyes without involvement of the cornea and iris (JM Huber 1978, 1973).

It can be concluded that the current numerical standards of assessment of irritation (EU) were not met, therefore, no classification is required.

Irritation to the respiratory sytem is related to deposition of particles, but is no particular inherent property of silica / silicates.

Effect level: empty Endpoint conclusion: Adverse effect observed
