Description of key information

Hydrolysis expected at pH <7, with rapid hydrolysis (ca. 2 minutes) expected at pH <2.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

n-Vinylpyrrolidone (nVP) is considered readily biodegradable and with hyrolysis expected only under acidic conditions. At pH 1.2, a half-life of approximately 1.5 minutes has been reported and, at a pH of 7.2 the substance was found to be stable for at least 24 hours (Hawi, et. al., 1987). As part of a study in which nVP was administered in drinking water, it was reported to be stable in water for at least 4 days (BASF, 1986).
