Description of key information

DES is harmful by inhalation and oral route and is toxique by dermal route.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Acute toxicity: via oral route

Endpoint conclusion
Dose descriptor:
LD50
350 mg/kg bw

Acute toxicity: via inhalation route

Endpoint conclusion

Acute toxicity: via dermal route

Endpoint conclusion

Additional information

3 oral LD50 were found in rat: 350; 880 or 1410 mg/kg.

All of them were poorly described so it was not possible to define the most relevant one. The lowest has then been chosen.

A dermal LD50 of 700 mg/kg was obtained in rabbit.

A very old inhalation study gave a LC50 (4h) between 250 and 500 ppm in rat. The validity is poor.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to these values, a classification as cat 4 for oral acute toxicity, cat 3 for dermal acute toxicity is necessary.

Annex VI classification is: cat 4 for the 3 routes. This cat 4 for inhalation can be kept.
