Description of key information

Data on physical properties of representative substances in this Category were obtained from a number of secondary sources. The data in these secondary sources are based on a critical evaluation of peer-reviewed data and the selected values are considered to be reliable and representative of the property under investigation. Information in the review process was documented in the introduction of the source. The use of Klimisch codes (Klimischet al., 1997), was extended to these secondary sources and a reliability code of (2)valid with restrictionswas assigned when using the authoritative secondary source.

Review of the collated information indicates that as gases, the Category members will partition primarily to air. They have moderate solubility in water and low boiling point. As the boiling point of the representative substances (butene, isobutene, butane, isobutane) ranges from -6.26 to 3.7°C, theirvapour pressure will be above the limit of measurement (i.e. 105 Pa) but indicates that the substances will have a high volatility.

Based on the explosion limits for the category members (1.6 to 10 %), all category members are classified as Flammable Gas Category 1
