Conclusions:
Findings indicate that Benzotriazole could adversely affect rare minnows in a sex-dependent manner.
Executive summary:

Adult chinese rare minnows were exposed to 0.05, 0.5 and 5 mg/L Benzotriazole for 28 days. At the highest test concentration pathological changes of the liver showing hypertrophy, nuclei pyknosis and vacuolization was observed. Furthermore, degradation of the ovary in female and stimulation of spermatogenesis in male fish were detected. The 17β-estradiol plasma level was significantly increased in males but decreased in females.

Up-regulation of CYP19B, GnRHs and LHβ mRNA in the brain was detected at all doses. In male gonads, the transcriptional levels of StAR, CYP11A, 3βHSD, CYP17, 17βHSD, and CYP19A were decreased at the highest dose. Most of these genes, except 3βHSD, were increased in females at all test concentrations. Additionally, the expression level of vitellogenin in the livers in all groups was significantly increased in comparison to the control group.
