Bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate is a colourless organic liquid with a melting range between −68.5 °C and −66 °C. The boiling point could not be determined because the substance decomposes before boiling.

The major hydrolytical degradation product 2-ethylhexan-1-ol (CAS 104-76-7) is decisive in the environmental risk assessment as the parent substance undergoes rapid hydrolysis (t½ < 1 h at 5 °C). The boiling point and melting point for 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, are reported to be 186.2 (± 0.2) °C and −70 °C, respectively.

The density of bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate is 980 g/L at 0 °C. Due to the substance properties experimental determination of the vapour pressure was not possible. Therefore, QSAR calculations and DSC were used to estimate the vapour pressure at 25 °C which was determined as being in the range between 0.001 and 0.0001 Pa.

Experimental determination of the partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) was not possible due to rapid hydrolysis of the parent substance. The QSAR estimation (EPISuite, KOWWIN v1.68) results in a log Kow of 6.97 for bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate.

Rapid hydrolysis is also the reason for using the value for the major degradation product 2-ethyl-hexan-1-ol in the risk assessment instead that for the parent compound bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate. The log Kow of 2-ethyl-hexan-1-ol was estimated to be 2.73 (EPISuite KOWWIN v1.68).

Due to the rapid hydrolysis of the substance it was also not possible to determine the water solubility of bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate. The water solubility of the main degradation product 2-ethyl-1-hexanol of 880 mg/L (Amidon et al., 1974) is used in the risk assessment.

Bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate has no flash point up to the decomposition temperature of approximately 50 °C.

The self accelerating decomposition temperature (SADT) of di-(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate is 0 °C. The OP-type of the substance (UN number 3113) is as follows: "Organic peroxide type C, liquid, temperature controlled". The test item does not detonate and does not deflagrate rapidly.

The substance has no explosive properties because it is not classified as Organic Peroxide Type C (reference CLP regulations 2.15.2.2 and UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, 16th revised edition, Section 2.5.3.2.4. The stability in organic solvents is not considered critical and testing is therefore not required. This is due to the fact that for organic peroxides in the maximum market concentrations there is extensive experience in handling/shipment, supporting the stability in the solvents used (or even needed for stabilising reasons). In some cases, approval by authorities has been obtained (e.g. statements by the BAM, Germany) specifying suitable solvents. In addition, in the context of toxicity studies, analytical data support and confirm the stability of the substance in relevant solvents.

The dynamic viscosity of di-(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate is 40 mPa × s at 0 °C.
