An overview of all gathered chronic toxicity data on Hg towards freshwater organisms is provided in the following sections. Accepted studies (K1 and K2-studies), and concise summary tables are presented for each trophic level. Since enough freshwater and saltwater ecotoxicity data are available, both compartments were evaluated separately. All accepted aquatic toxicity data are then further processed and the most sensitive endpoint is further propagated in the SSD and used for the PNEC calculation. For assessing the aquatic toxicity of elemental mercury the use of toxicity tests of mercury salts (e. g. Mercury dichloride CAS: 7487 -94 -7) is appropriate. Mercury will perform its effect eventually as free Hg metal ion, therefore all tests performed with soluble mercury salts are important.
