Description of key information

In the atmosphere, maleic anhydride will indirectly photodegrade by reactions with OH radicals. The half-life calculated for this reaction is 4.5 hours.

In contact with water maleic anhydride rapidly hydrolyses, forming maleic acid. The hydrolysis rate determined for maleic anhydride is 3140 sec-1 resulting in a half life of 0.3 minutes (Bunton et al. 1963).
