Details on results:
Stable: no. Hydrolysis to maleic acid occurs in aqueous conditions, so test substance was likely a mixture of maleic anhydride, maleic acid and its salts.
Maleic acid was the analyte measured. Measured concentrations are the result of the mathematical conversion of the actual unrounded concentration of maleic acid to maleic anhydride equivalents. At test termination, pH measurements for all test solutions were <1, indicating that the buffer capacity of the test solution had been exceeded.
Conclusions:
Based on the results presented in the OECD SIDS, 2004, it can be concluded that the water solubility of the test substance is 407 g/L at 20 °C.

In a GLP guideline study according to OECD 105, the water solubility of maleic anhydride was investigated. As maleic acid hydrolyses rapidly in water, the concentration of maleic anhydride has been determined via its hydrolisation product – maleic acid. The water solubility of maleic anhydride (as maleic acid) was determined to be 407 g/L at 20 °C.

Maleic anhydride can therefore be considered as a highly soluble substance in water.

Additional information

The substance is hydrolytically unstable at pH 4, 7 and 9 (half-life less than 12 hours). Therefore a.m. value refers to maleic acid.
