Additional information

Appearance/physical state/colour

On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, 3-chloroaniline was found to be a colourless organic liquid with unpleasant odour at 30degC and 960 hPa.

Melting point/freezing point

Freezing point of 3-chloroaniline was found to be -10.28 degC.

Boiling point

The boiling point of 3-chloroaniline by the distillation method was found to be 168.8 degC at the atmospheric pressure of 960 hPa. No decomposition of 3-chloroaniline was observed at the boiling point. This boiling point value when converted at 101325 hPa is equivalent to 178.163 degC.

Density

The density of 3-chloroaniline by the mass by volume method was found to be 1.186 g/cm3 at room temperature of 30 degC.This value when converted at 20 degC is equivalent to 1.779.

Particle size distribution (Granulometry)

Granulometry (particle size distribution) is a property that is relevant only to solids. Since 3-chloroaniline is a liquid substance this testing was not scientifically possible and hence this end point was considered to be waived.

Vapour pressure

The Vapour pressure of 3-chloroaniline was found to be 8.799 Pa at temperature 25 degC.

Partition co-efficient

The experimental value of octanol water partition co-efficient (log Pow) of 3-chloroaniline is 0.770 at temperature 30 degC and pH of 7.87.This value indicates that 3-chloroaniline is hydrophilic in nature.

Water solubility

The experimental value of the water solubility of 3-chloroaniline was found to be 20000 mg/L at 30 degC indicating that the chemical is very soluble in water.

Solubility in organic solvents / fat solubility

Gravimetric method was used to determine the solubility of the substance in organic solvent. The experimental value of solubility of 3-chloroaniline in methanol at 30 degC was found to be 60000 mg/L indicating that the substance is very soluble in methanol. Using the Soxhlet/Solvent extraction method the solubility of the substance in Petroleum ether is observed to be 30000 mg/L at 30 degC, indicating that the substance is very soluble in petroleum ether. The solubility value of 3-chloroaniline in methanol at 20 degC is equivalent to a value of 40000 mg/L.

Surface tension

Surface tension of 3-chloroaniline was estimated to be 45.3±3.0 mN/m at 25 degC by using ACD/PhysChem Suite. This value when converted at 20 degC is equivalent to 36.24 mN/m.

Flash point

The experimental value of flash point of 3-chloroaniline by the closed cup method was found to be 110 degC at an atmospheric pressure of 960 hPa.This flash point value when converted at 101325 Pa is equivalent to 116.101 degC.

Auto flammability

3-Chloroaniline did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 30 degC and atmospheric pressure of 960 hPa. This indicates that 3-chloroaniline is not auto-flammable.

Flammability

From the experimental values of flammability, 3-chloroaniline ignited when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950 degC was brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 3-chloroaniline is flammable only at high temperature of about 950 degC. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, 3-chloroaniline was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness

According to theoretical considerations based on chemical structure,3-chloroaniline does not possess explosive properties. The reason for this is there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties in 3-chloroaniline. Thus, as per column 2 of Annex VII this endpoint was considered for waiver.

Oxidizing properties

33-chloroaniline was found to have mild oxidising property since 142.3 ml of KMnO4 was required for getting the end point of the redox titration for 100 ml of 3-chloroaniline.Thus, the chemical is considered as non-oxidising for the purpose of chemical safety report and classification.

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products

3-chloroaniline was found to be stable in organic solvent dichloro methane and no degradation products were formed after 24 hours as evident from the GC-MS chromatogram obtained at 0 hours and that obtained after 24 hours.

pH

1% by volume solution of 3-chloroaniline was found to exhibit a pH of 8.02 at 27 degC. Thus 1% by volume solution of 3-chloroaniline is basic in nature.

Dissociation constant

The average experimental pKa value for 3-chloroaniline was found to be 0.0000000000000117 at 30 degC indicating that the chemical has dissociation properties. This pka value when converted at 20 degC is equivalent to 0.0000000000000078.

Viscosity

The dynamic viscosity of 3-chloroaniline was found to be 19.414 mPa s at 30 degC.The viscosity value when converted at 20 degC is equivalent to 29.121 mPa s. (dynamic).
