Two new GLP biodegradation studies have been performed with 3-PPB to internationally accepted guidelines, the OECD Guideline 301 F (Ready Biodegradability: Manometric Respirometry Test) and the OECD guideline 310 (CO2 headspace test). 3-PPB was biodegrading in both tests but only in the OECD310 test was the substance deemed readily biodegradable.
Two new GLP biodegradation studies have been performed with 3-PPB. These
two studies were performed to internationally accepted guidelines, the
OECD Guideline 301 F (Ready Biodegradability: Manometric Respirometry
Test) and the OECD guideline 310 (CO2 headspace test). In the manometric
respirometry test, 3-PPB was degrading quickly the first two days and
degradation continued consistently after that point but at a lower rate
and plateaued below the pass level of 60%. Therefore in the OECD 301F
test, 3-PPB was determined not to be readily biodegradable. Because of
the stringency of the screening methods, low biodegradation values do
not necessarily mean that the test substance is not biodegradable under
environmental conditions, but indicate that more work is necessary to
establish biodegradability. Therefore a decision was made to investigate
the biodegradability of 3-PPB further in the "CO2 headspace test" (OECD
310) because the test has been used previously in cases of poorly
soluble substances. This test has been successfully completed and
demonstrated that production of CO2 by mixtures containing Kalama®
K-Flex® 613 was above 10% of the theoretical maximum by Day 3 (41%), at
60% by day 7 and 92% at the end of the test on Day 28. Substances are
considered to be readily biodegradable in this test if CO2 production is
equal to or greater than 60% of the theoretical value within ten days of
the level achieving 10%. Kalama® K-Flex® 613 can, therefore, be
considered readily biodegradable.
