Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Toxicity to plants was studied is a range of studies, related to the potential fertilizing and fungicidal effect of the test substance.

Growth reduction and stunted growth was observed in young mandarin trees and in maize plants when treated with phosphite at dose rates equalling P-fertiliser levels. The effect of phosphite was less pronounced or absent when the nutritional status of the tree was optimal, in other words, when the plant did not need phosphite as a source of P.

These effects seem to be in line with those of the aquatic toxicity studies, where algae showed to be most sensitive by far. The toxicity to fish and invertebrates (Daphnia) was so low that only limit tests were performed. Therefore it may be assumed that by testing plants the most sensitive terrestrial taxa have been tested and that waiving testing of other terrestrial species is justified.
