Environmental behaviour

The test substance phosphonic acid is an inorganic dibasic acid. The substance will rapidly dissolve and dissociate in water. The pKa-values for dissociation in water are 1.8 [ formation of HP(O)2(OH)- ] and 6.2 [formation of HPO32- ]. Thus, at environmental pH between pH 6 and 8, the substance will be present mainly as the HPO32-ion which is a moderately strong acid. Phosphonic acid and its protonated forms are good reducing agents, although not necessarily quick to react. The anion will be attracted by positively charged surfaces but there is a low potential for sorption onto organic matter. Tests on biodegradation and hydrolysis, bioaccumulation and sorption have been waived.
