Additional information

The substance is an inorganic and will not follow the commonly used rules for accumulation into lipids. Toxicity is observed only for plants, where it may interfere with the uptake of nutrients (phosphate); yet at the same time it may be transformed into the same nutrient. As the uptake by plants takes place merely through the water phase, it is considered that the safety limits set by PNECaqua will provide sufficient protection.

Conclusion on classification

The lowest EC50 value in short term testing is >100 mg/L. The substance is inorganic and biodegradation and Kow are not relevant. According to the Directive 67/548/EC the substance is not classified.

Based on these available ecotoxicity data, phosphonic acid (phosphorous acid flake) is not classified as hazardous to the environment according to Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation 1272/2008/EC.
