Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A study according to OECD 201 was performed to assess the inhibitory effect of Bornafix on the growth of the unicellular green alga Selenastrum capricornutum, Strain No. CCAP 278/4. Algal cultures exposed to 5 test concentrations of Bornafix plus one untreated control and one solvent control (100 µl auxiliary solvent per litre), were incubated on an orbital shaker under continuous illumination at 24°C for 72 hours. Growth was monitored daily by measuring the absorbance of each culture at 665 nm. All results are based on measured concentrations from 0 hour analysis because it is likely that the substance is at least partly adsorbing to algae and/or algae are interfering with the measurements of the substance. Measured concentrations varied from 40 - 69% of nominal at 0 hours and 12 - 40 % of nominal at 72 hours. The following values were derived from the data: ErC50 (24 - 48h) 11 mg/L and NOErC: 1.7 mg/L. The growth rate (EC50 and NOEC) between 24 - 48h hours is considered to be conservative because at shorter or longer exposure times the growth inhibition is less.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
11 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
1.7 mg/L
