Description of key information

NP did not produce any toxicity to soil microorganism at a soil concentration of 100 ppm in a 40 d test. The NOEC of NP for terrestrial microorganisms was determined to be 100 mg/kg.

Additional information

A study was conducted to evaluate the biotoxicity of nonylphenol to soil microorganism.Nonylphenol at concentrations of 0, 100 and 1000 ppm was incubated with a reconstituted soil system (compost + sandstone) in triplicate at 25 °C in darkness for 40 d. The effect on CO2 evolution and biomass ATP were monitored during this period.CO2 evolution did not differ significantly between the 100 ppm samples and the controls. In contrast, in 1000 ppm samples, CO2 evolution was significantly depressed by the Day 4. Respiration was depressed by an average of 64% compared with controls between 5 -40 d. Biomass ATP was also declined progressively after the Day 5 at 1000 ppm concentration. At 100 ppm no toxic effects were detected.

In conclusion, nonylphenol did not produce any toxicity to soil microorganism at 100 ppm concentration (in soil) in 40 d incubation test (Trocme M, Tarradellas J and Vedy JC , 1988).
