Abiotic degradation

Citric acid does not possess any functional group that is susceptible to hydrolysis and the substance is expected to be stable in aqueous solution. In addition, the biodegradability of the substance dominates the understanding of stability.

Biotic degradation

Available data suggest that citric acid is rapidly degradable in surface water, soils and sediment. Therefore, based on available data, citric acid is not expected to present a hazard to the environment.
