Description of key information

Skin irritation:

Corrosive or irritating to the skin (OECD 439; GLP). Since the RhE test methods covered by OECD TG 439 cannot resolve between UN GHS Categories 1 or 2, a follow-up study will be conducted to distinguish between the two categories and upon study completion, a robust study summary will be incorporated in the REACH registration dossier.

Eye irritation:

According to the bovine corneal opacity and permeability assay, no prediction can be made, since the IVIS score was between 3 and 55 (OECD 437; GLP). However, the in vitro skin irritation test (OECD 439; GLP) showed a mean relative tissue viability of 2.9 % (clear positive finding indicating possible corrosive properties). Since the eye is the more susceptible tissue, it is assumed as a worst-case scenario that magnesium 2-ethylhexanoate should be classified as inducing irreversible effects on the eye (Category 1; H318).
