Additional information

Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) has a CASRN of 123 -03 -5, and as a monohydrate, 6004 -24 -6. It is an iminium salt, in the form of white solid crystals where the particles are generally in the range of 100 to 400 microns in diameter. Less than 3% of the particles are in the respiratory range under 15 microns in diameter. It is an ionic salt in aqueous solution, with alkaline properties. The log Kow is 1.71, with a water solubility of 111 mg/L. With its long hydrophobic tail and charged pyridine nucleus, CPC is surface active (44 mN/m at 20 oC), and acts as a surfactant, often forming micelle structures. The density of CPC is 1.06.

It is not hazardous from a physico-chemical perspective. Its melting point is 80 -84oC and, upon further heating, decomposes at 160oC. It is not flammable, explosive or oxidizing.
