Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Executive summary:

The toxicity of Butyldiethanolamine towards aquatic microorganisms was determined according to the international standard ISO 8192 (BASF, 1987). Activated sludge of an wwtp treating industrial sewage (BASF AG) with an initial biomass concentration of 1 g dw/L was exposed to the test substance for 30 minutes. Test concentrations of 0 (control), 363 and 727 mg/L were applied. Based on the respiration rate, the EC20 was determined to be > 727 mg/L (nominal concentration).

Description of key information

Butyldiethanolamine_ISO 8192_BASF-1987: EC20 (30 min) > 727 mg/L (nominal concentration)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The toxicity of the registered substance Butyldiethanolamine towards aquatic microorganisms has been experimentally determined.

In addition, a study performed with the read-across substance DBEA serves as supporting information.

The toxicity of the source substance Butyldiethanolamine towards aquatic microorganisms was determined according to the international standard ISO 8192 (BASF, 1987). Activated sludge of a wwtp treating industrial sewage (BASF AG) with an initial biomass concentration of 1 g dw/L was exposed to the test substance for 30 minutes. Test concentrations of 0 (control), 363 and 727 mg/L were applied. Based on the respiration rate, the EC20 was determined to be > 727 mg/L (nominal concentration).

Furthermore, data on its structural analogue Dibutylethanolamine (DBEA, CAS 102-81-8) is taken to evaluate this endpoint (please refer also to read-across statement attached in IUCLID Section 13).

The toxicity of the read-across substance Dibutylaminoethanol (CAS 102-81-8) towards aquatic microorganisms was determined according to OECD Guideline 209 in compliance with GLP (BASF AG, 2005). Substance concentrations of 0 (blank control) and 1000 mg/L were tested (limit test). As inoculum, domestic activated sludge was used. Microorganisms were exposed to the test substance for 30 min. As reference substance, 3,5-dichlorophenol was selected. The respective EC50 (30 min) value of 3,5-dichlorophenol was in the range of 5-30 mg/L. For the test substance, an EC20 (30 min) value of > 1000 mg/L based on the respiration rate was determined.
