Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

[2-(Perfluorohexyl)ethyl]dichloro(methyl)silane hydrolyses rapidly in contact with water and moist air, releasing two moles of hydrogen chloride (HCl) for each mole of parent material. Severe skin, eye and respiratory damage would be expected due to release of HCl.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Reference
Endpoint:
skin irritation: in vitro / ex vivo
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a strong acid (pH ≤ 2.0) or base (pH ≥ 11.5) and the available information indicates that it should be classified as skin corrosion (Category 1, 1A, 1B or 1C)
Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (corrosive)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Respiratory irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Additional information

[2-(Perfluorohexyl)ethyl]dichloro(methyl)silane is a chlorosilane, generating hydrogen chloride in the presence of moisture; it is expected to be corrosive. Therefore, in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the in vitro skin and eye irritation studies (required in Section 8.1.1 and 8.2.1) do not need to be conducted as the available information indicates that the substance meets the criteria for classification as corrosive to skin.

Justification for classification or non-classification

[2-(perfluorohexyl)ethyl]dichloro(methyl)silane is classified 'Skin Corr. 1A' and 'Eye Dam. 1', with hazard statement H314 'Causes severe skin burns and eye damage' according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Consistent with other chlorosilanes, the additional classification EUH071 'Corrosive to respiratory tract' is also proposed.
