In a guideline study according toEPA subdivision N, section 161-1, MON 13900 did not hydrolyze in sterile aqueous solution at pH 5, 7 or 9. Hydrolysis is therefore not likely to be an important route of degradation in the aquatic environment. However, in the presence of artificial sunlight in unsensitized sterile aqueous solution MON 13900 was extensively photolyzed to more than 12 neutral and acidic photoproducts, none of which were present at greater than 10% of the solution contained radioactivity with a half life of 30 days (one day = 12 hours of artificial sunlight). The presence of humic acid as a sensitizing agent increased the rate of photodegradation in aqueous solution. The photoproducts formed in the unsensitized and sensitized solutions were similar but quantitatively different, with four photoproducts being greater than 10% in the sensitized solution. Further testing of MON 13900-derived photoproducts formed at greater than 10% in a sensitised solution was not condyucted as prolonged exposure of the aquatic environment is not expected. MON 13900 will be applied only once per year at a low application rate, resulting in negligible exposure of surface water. The resulting concentration of photoproducts will be at or below the limit of detection of most modern analytical instruments
